“The spectacular hillside vineyards of the winery T-Oinos… arguably makes Greece’s greatest wines.” – James Suckling on T-Oinos Winery

T-Oinos Biodynamic Greek Wine

Located on the Cycladic island of Tinos, Greece, T-Oinos (whose name is derived from the Greek word “Oinos,” which translates to “Wine”) is situated amongst a unique Mediterranean landscape. Surrounded by the Aegean Sea and scattered with rare granite boulders, the winery’s terroir produces authentic premium wines that showcase the island’s indigenous grape varieties and distinctive microclimates.

The T-Oinos Project

Discovered by Alain Ducasse Executive Head Sommelier Gerard Margeon, T-Oinos has been developing its strategy as a winery for over 20 years. The dedication of a determined team took this island’s rare and unusual terroir and used it to create some of the best Greek wines. Master Vigneron Stéphane Derenoncourt, a skilled wine-growing consultant whose strategy has been implemented at over 140 estates in wine regions like Bordeaux, strives to represent the character of the vines grown at T-Oinos. His priority when curating the blends is expressing the essence of the island, showcasing the climate, the soil, and the quality of craftsmanship put into each bottle. Derenoncourt works alongside Head Winemaker Thanos Georgilas, who has previously worked on the production and viticulture team at the renowned Paulliac winery Chateau Latour.

The energy and intensity of the rough terrain are present throughout the T-Oinos terroir.

The Assyrtiko Grape Variety

Known as the “King of the Aegean Sea,” Assyrtiko is a prominent white grape variety in Greece and particularly notable in the Cyclades. This variety thrives in the volcanic soils of Tinos and withstands extreme weather conditions that can impact the island. T-Oinos harnesses the potential of Assyrtiko to produce pure, mineral-driven wines with vibrant acidity and citrusy aromas. These wines often exhibit a saline character, reflective of their maritime terroir, making them refreshing and well-suited for pairing with seafood dishes.

The Clos Stegasta Asyrtiko and Clos Stegasta Asyrtiko Rare are produced with 100% Assyrtiko grown in the winery’s Clos Stegasta vineyard. The Asyrtiko goes through spontaneous fermentation in a mixture of stainless-steel tanks, wooden vats, and oak barrels. An energetic wine with striking notes of citrus, honeysuckle, and crushed rocks, Clos Stegasta Asyrtiko is a powerful representation of the variety.

Asyrtiko Rare is fermented in a mixture of oak casks and amphora. It is the ultimate expression of Assyrtiko, produced in only the top vintages and limited in bottles. The nose is intense and vivid with lime zest and hints of spice and oak, followed by a fresh palate with fine tannins.

The Mavrotragano Grape Variety

Mavrotragano, on the other hand, is a rare and indigenous red grape variety native to the Aegean islands, including Tinos. T-Oinos has played a pivotal role in reviving and championing Mavrotragano, which produces wines of deep color, intense aromatics, and robust tannins. The wines crafted from Mavrotragano by T-Oinos are known for their complexity, with flavors ranging from dark berries and herbs to hints of spice and earthiness, offering a distinct taste of the island’s rugged landscape.

Similar to the Assyrtiko varieties, both the Clos Stegasta Mavrotragano and the Clos Stegasta Mavrotragano Rare are crafted with 100% Mavrotragano from the winery’s Clos Stegasta vineyard. These wines are fermented with whole berries in large oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The Mavrotragano produces aromas of oregano and violets layered with dark cherries and espresso roast. The velvety tannins and overall complexity create a strong and dynamic wine.

Clos Stegasta Mavrotragano Rare is an impressive bottle built for aging and decanting. The notes of blackberry and dark chocolate combined with the firm tannins and complex mouthfeel create an intricate and vibrant wine. This rare blend is one of the finest representations of the Mavrotragano grape variety.
