Outstanding Certified Kosher Wine from Bordeaux Haut-Médoc, La Demoiselle d’Haut Peyrat
The Beginning of Château Peyrat-Fourthon
One of the most advanced vineyards in the Haut Médoc appellation, Château Peyrat-Fourthon is a pioneer in balancing tradition and craftsmanship to create exceptional Kosher wines.
Château Peyrat-Fourthon, located in the heart of Bordeaux’s Haut Médoc appellation, has a history that spans back to the 16th century. The first topographic survey of the kingdom of France shows the castle’s vineyards located on a historical wine terroir. In 1834, the region’s mayor began the first cultivation of grapes on the estate grounds.
The Château was first acquired by winemaker Hervé Godin in 1998. Upon purchasing the estate, the cellar was renovated to accommodate new winemaking methods and combine modern techniques while sustaining its classic traditions. Since 2004, owner Pierre Narboni has grown the winery to a new level of prestige. The once 12-hectare vineyard has expanded to 23 hectares, including the 18th-century hunting lodge of the ancestral Domaine Fourthon and the first Château Peyrat vineyards from 1932. In 2020, Château Peyrat-Fourthon was named a Cru Bourgeois Superior in the year’s classification of Crus Bourgeois du Médoc.
Kosher Wines and Jewish Holidays
Kosher winemaking adheres to specific religious guidelines established by Jewish law, ensuring that the entire process from harvest to bottle is conducted using kosher materials and guidelines. The wines are also produced during the observation of the Shabbat. These practices guarantee that the wine is suitable for those who follow the kosher guidelines and reflect a deep respect for tradition and craftsmanship, resulting in high-quality wines for everyone to enjoy.
Château Peyrat-Fourthon set out to improve the quality of kosher wines produced in Médoc. La Demoiselle d’Haut Peyrat is harvested and produced under the rabbinical supervision of Beth Din of Paris. All aspects of the winemaking process are carried out using only certified kosher products, making it suitable for those who observe the kosher diet.
Kosher wines play an integral role during certain Jewish holidays and celebrations. During Passover, for example, it is traditional to drink wine at specific points throughout the meal as a symbol of joy and celebration. Wine is also commonly enjoyed during Rosh Hashanah and Hanukkah celebrations or during Shabbat dinners.
Technical Aspects and Tasting Notes
The Haut-Médoc appellation in Bordeaux is renowned for its diverse terroir, which plays a crucial role in the quality of its wines. The region features a mix of gravel, clay, and limestone soils, predominantly composed of well-draining gravel that enhances the ripening of grape varieties—particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Château Peyrat-Fourthon is an excellent example of the mixed soil types, with its vineyards consisting of Garonne and Pyrenees gravel, limestone, and clay.
Winemaker Hervé Godin crafts La Demoiselle d’Haut Peyrat 2021 under the rabbinical supervision of Beth Din of Paris. It is made up of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot.
